Deke: Saints LT Terron Armstead is a terror

Second year offensive tackle Terron Armstead is on his way up. Like the Jeffersons' theme song "Movin' on Up," Armstead is going to get his piece of the pie, and I'll go out on a strong limb and say he's after a big piece of pie!

The 6'5" 304-pound former Pine-Bluff Golden Lion could become the best young offensive lineman in the game this season.  “It’s definitely night and day; coming in last year, I had to work on my three-point stance. That’s day one as an offensive lineman. Just being able to work the small fine-tune things and technique, it’s been able to help me out a whole lot," Armstead said.

Armstead has quickly gained attention because of his play at the end of last season. The Saints offense's increased ability to run the football in their last three games upped his status.

Armstead can follow the footsteps of former Saints LT Jermon Bushrod, now with the Bears. Bushrod was inserted in the line-up in the summer of 2009 and became a Pro-Bowler and I expect Armstead to do the same.

He's on an O-Line that paves the way for one of the best offensive units in the game, and he's solely responsible for protecting Drew Brees' blind side.  But what's most important is that there has not been one play, one one-on-one drill that I've witnessed that Terron has not won once he's gotten his hands on the opposing defensive linemen. Armstead gets his grip on the defender and then stones him. Once big #72 has his hands in place it's over!

Armstead looks to me as athletic of a left tackle in the game today. “Yeah, I try to use it in certain plays," Terron said of his athleticism.  "Offensive line is so much technique and universal technique, so I try to get those things down. Whenever I can implement my speed and agility, I try to.”

After learning the ropes for most of last season, Armstead was thrust in the spotlight the final two regular season games.  Things did not get off to a great start in the first half of the Saints game at Carolina last season, but then Armstead begin to look more comfortable. The third round pick would go on to have three very good outings in the final games of the season.

Armstead looks the part, and he's walked the walk so far.  His teammates rave about what he has done and what he can become.  And his quiet, humble demeanor and great attitude are a recipie for a long successful NFL career.

There are few players in the game on the offensive line that are truly dominant players on a consistent basis. I'm not ready to claim that Terron Armstead is one of those players ,but I will say that I think he's close. This terror on the left side is one impressive dude.  And if I was picking who I wanted on my team, he'd be on my list!
