Deke: Tigers set to battle Vanderbilt

The SEC Tournament is here, and the #3 seeded LSU Tigers will battle the Vanderbilt Commodores Wednesday morning at 9:30AM here on WWL Radio.

“We won’t try and adjust too much,” Coach Mainieri said today on Sports Talk. “We will try and go out and do the same things we’ve done all season long.”

The Tigers earned a first round bye in the SEC tourney and will now face the Commodores, who eliminated Tennessee with a 3-2 win over the Vols.

Jared Poche will go to the mound for the Tigers as he faces arguably best pitcher in the nation in Vanderbilt’s Tyler Beede.  The Tigers are 40-14-1 on the season, and are ranked #14 in the Collegiate Baseball Top 25 as well as #14 in the Baseball America Top 25 poll.

Mainieri went on to talk about the Tigers strong play heading into the SEC Tournament, and we asked if he thought his team needed to win a few games in order to secure a spot as a regional host next week when the NCAA Baseball Tournament begins.

“I feel like we’ve earned that already. Would it help if we won some games?  I’m quite sure it would.  We’ve won 40 games already and we are the #3 seed in the SEC.  To me that speaks volumes. But you never know what the selection committee is thinking.”
