Deke: de la Puente grateful to be back in Black & Gold

He took a long road to make into the NFL, but since he arrived in New Orleans back in 2010, Saints center Brian de la Puente has been a solid leader on the Saints offensive line.

“I did almost have to go get a real job.  It’s a dream come true to be down here in New Orleans and play for such a great organization,” de La Puente told me and Bobby Hebert on SportsTalk not long after he and the team announced his return.  de la puente signed his tender offer with the Saints on Tuesday afternoon.

Brian signed on to the Saints practice squad back in October in 2010 and since has become the starting center handing the ball to one of the best in the game today in QB Drew Brees.  Although de la Puente was caught between a rock and a hard place when he came to New Orleans, he just did his job and eventually landed the starting center job.

Brian spent time with six different teams in a three year span before he landed on solid ground here in New Orleans with the Saints.  When Brian came to New Orleans, Jonathan Goodwin was the starter, and the Saints had just drafted what was thought to be the future center in Matt Tenat.  And, to push Brian even further back on the depth chart, the Saints added future Hall of Fame center Olin Krutz when Jonathan Goodwin signed with the 49ers.

The “Cajun Cannon” says Brian is the type of guy you tend to cheer for.  “He had to take the long road to get to the NFL and make a team.  But now he is a proven player that is doing well in New Orleans,” Hebert told me.

Since the 2011 season, Brian has handled the center spot for 28 games in the regular season, and two playoff games as well.
