Deke Bellavia: Week #9 - Down to two games!
Can you believe it? The 2013 prep football regular season has just two games left. This week and next week… then the payoffs begin. We’ve seen some amazing play so far, and the next two weeks are crucial for many teams trying to win district titles and earn home playoff games.
I get to stay close to home tonight; that’s always nice to watch area teams close to the crib. The #4 ranked EJ Warriors travel to Washington Parish to face the #9 ranked Franklinton Demons. This is a huge match-up in District 8-4A.
I’m very excited to finally check out the East Jefferson Warriors. They’ve blown out everyone they’ve played. EJ climbed to #4 in the 4A top ten and the Warriors look to be a solid contender in the post season.
EJ scored an amazing 391 points for an average of 49 points per game. But the Warriors defense is far more impressive, shutting out six of their eight foes. And, EJ allowed just 24 points all season long. The Warriors’ average margin of victory is 46 points per game.
Franklinton is 7-1 and the Demons won six straight after suffering their lone loss in a 34-12 setback to 5A Covington back in week two. The Demons average 34.3 points per game scoring and allow only 10 points per game on defense. The teams are good. The folks are great. And, the weather is going to be cool. I can’t wait to be back in Washington Parish.
Other big games: the Karr Cougars take on the McDonough #35 Roneagles. Karr has a huge week 10 showdown with Warren Easton, which could decide the District 9-4A title. But both Karr and Warren Easton have some business to take care of this weekend before we can hype that possible showdown.
Ponchatoula visits St. Paul’s in a key District 6-5A match-up. The Green Wave are 6-2 overall and 4-1 in district play, while the Wolves are 5-3 and 4-1. Ponchatoula is coming off a 69-51 win over Fontainebleau and the Wave won four straight games.
The Wolves had something happen to them last week for the first time since 2008. St. Paul’s lost their first District 6-5A game in five seasons in a 38-7 loss to Covington. St. Paul’s can still win the district with a win over the Green Wave. And, the Wave can do the same by knocking off the Wolves. This should be a real good game.
Up in Baton Rouge there are several big games this weekend. In a key District 7-3A tilt, the #1 ranked 3A University High Cubs entertain the West Feliciana Saints. And, in a big 5A match-up the East Ascension Spartans entertain the St. Amant Gators.
So as the coaches say, the games only get bigger. And, now with just two weeks left and the playoffs nearing, the time is now for some teams, or there may not be a later! Get out and enjoy prep football this weekend. Gotta love it!
