On the eve of the NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints are ready to make their first round pick at #27. The Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert and I sat down for a pre-draft visit with Executive Vice President/General Manager of the New Orleans Saints Mickey Loomis.
“I really wish I could meet with you guys (media) a few days after the draft. This time of year, I think we keep things close to the vest and make sure that we (Saints Staff) are doing everything we can to be as best prepared for the draft as possible,” Loomis said.
During our 15 minute conversation, Loomis talked about the number of players the Saints worked out prior to the draft. “We were able to work out a lot of players, our scouts went to many pro-days across the country and we were able to sit down and interview many players.”
Loomis talked about the importance of being able to land top-flight undrafted players over the course of the last several drafts. In the past five NFL Drafts, no other team in the league has had less picks than the Saints. I asked Loomis, did the lower number of picks make landing undrafted players more important?
“I don’t know if it makes things more important because our goal is always to bring in the best players to our club. We’ve had a lot of success with undrafted players making big contributions to our team.” Loomis feels like the 2014 NFL Draft has a lot of quality players available from top to bottom.
