Deke: A tale of two halves!
It was all Georgia in the first half of the 2011 SEC Football Championship. The upstart and big underdog Georgia Bulldogs threw haymaker after haymaker in the first half of the game against the heavily-favored and undefeated LSU Tigers.
But the Tigers, who looked to be on the ropes yet again, turned on the heat. LSU cranked it up after running out of the halftime lockerroom and dominated the Georgia Bulldogs to push record to 13-0 and earn a spot in the 2012 BCS title game in New Orleans next month.
In the first few moments of the game those Bulldogs from Athens looked like a team that was trying to be number one, while LSU looked like a team being content with being in the top spot. The Bulldogs got off to a 10-0 lead and did not allow the Tigers to pick up a single first down in the first half of the game.
But like he did a week ago, the fierce Honey Badger changed the complexity of the game with a punt return that went for a touchdown. That TD scored by Tyrann Mathieu looked like the straw that broke the camels back.
In the third quarter, the LSU Tigers began to impose their will and also started to run away from the Bulldogs. After not getting a single first down in the first half, the Tigers picked up eight while allowing UGA just two.
LSU piled up 123 yards in the third quarter after gaining just twelve in the first half. The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 21-0 in the third quarter of the game as well. (Very similar to last week, when LSU went down 14-0 to Arkansas and then outscored the hogs 41-3 the rest of the way.)
Against Georgia, LSU spotted the Dawgs a 10-0 cushion before outscoring the Bulldogs 42-0. Wow! What else can be said about the Tigers that they have not already done? Win the national title is all, I do believe!
