Saints Coach Sean Payton joined Bobby and me for SportsTalk on Tuesday. Coach talked with us about a variety of things, but when we asked what was the Saints' top priority, coach Payton quickly pointed to the defense.
"We need to play better defense and we have to run the ball better. I think those things go hand in hand," said Payton.
Coach Payton also talked about the hiring of new Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan.
“Rob’s a guy that’s got a great pedigree. He’s a guy that’s confident, he’s a guy that brings a certain amount of enthusiasm to his units. He’s a guy we’ve faced and I’ve known a long time. “
Payton also said the players will hit the weight room in mid-April and will be looking forward, not back.
"Last season was disappointing and we don't make any excuses. We have a lot of improving to do,” Payton said.
"We need to play better defense and we have to run the ball better. I think those things go hand in hand," said Payton. ..........
Wow. That's most insightful observation he has ever made. It's a freakin' shame no saints couldn't spot a true "gem" even if it came knocking on their front door.
Nowhere to Go But Up!
Any long-time Saints fan was optimistic about last season, but truthfully it's hard to create success without a proven head coach on the sidelines. Our D was downright embarassing, but thanks to the play of Brees and our offense, we managed 7 wins without Sean Payton. There's nowhere to go but up from here, and while we may not make a Super Bowl run this year, I believe we start putting the pieces back in place for many more years of great Saints football. WHO DAT 4 LIFE!
Under the radar is just fine after all the press last year.
It is an obvious statement about the defense and running game and why should he share the specifics with the likes of you, first poster? Something that Sean Payton is not saying is that the team needs to stay low keyed and out of the spotlight in the off season. I like his vanilla comments. He will walk softly and carry a big stick.
