Deke: LSU looks to iron out mistakes vs. UAB

OK, we hear it all the time or at least this time of year from all head coaches.  After the first game, coaches always say that the biggest improvement during a season takes place from the first game to the second game.

LSU did some real good things in their 37-27 win over the TCU Horned Frogs last weekend in Dallas.  Now, LSU will look to correct some of the mistakes they made in that game.  LSU plays host to the UAB Blazers this Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.

Looking back at the Tigers’ game film, Coach Miles pointed out a few things, including the play of WR’s Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry.

“They’re just getting started, I think the chemistry there is improved.  And that’s the kind of contribution they’ll make night after night and increase their productivity.”

Landry had eight receptions for 109 yards and a TD, while Beckam had five grabs for 118 yards in the Tigers’ victory over TCU.

Coach Miles said he was also impressed with the play of RB Terrance Magee, who had a breakout game.

“Terrance Magee is a talented guy, he’s a guy that people inside this program root for, because he’s just a great kid and works hard and has talent and ability,” Miles said.  “Given the opportunity, he’ll make that kind of contribution throughout the year.”

Magee, a junior from Franklinton, ran the ball 13 times for 95 yards and hit paydirt twice in the Tigers’ season-opening win.
As for RB Alfred Blue, who missed just about the entire 2012 season, Miles also had good things to say on Blue’s 19 carries for 89 yards of production.

“I thought he was great.  I thought both he and Magee were just what we needed, playing hard, rugged, and tough.”

Overall, the Coach saw an improved squad under his new Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron.

“A couple of balls dropped that we’d like to have back, and certainly a fumble here or there….but we were much better on offense,” Miles said.

While the LSU offense piled up more than 400 yards vs. TCU, quarterback Zach Mettenberger says he knows there’s room for improvement.

“You know there’s a lot of things to build on, a lot of positive things we can look at in film, but at the same time, there are areas we need to improve on…and we’re definitely going to start get better in all three phases.

The Tigers open a three-game home stand this weekend against UAB.  LSU then faces Kent State the following week before opening SEC play on September 21 against the Auburn Tigers.
