DOTD: No bridge tolls mean layoffs for 31 workers

State transportation officials say a suspension of bridge tolls at the Crescent City Connection in New Orleans means pink slips for 31 temporary workers hired pending the outcome of a contested November referendum.

The Department of Transportation and Development, which runs the bridge, said Wednesday the layoffs will take effect Friday. DOTD says it is working with the Workforce Commission to connect employees with other job opportunities.

The department ceased taking tolls Tuesday following state District Judge William Morvant's decision nullifying the results of the Nov. 6 election where voters extended the bridge tolls for 20 years. Morvant, of Baton Rouge, ruled that about 100 voters casting provisional ballots in Jefferson Parish were denied a vote on the toll referendum.
He ordered a new election for May 4.
