Cops: Robbery suspect dead after trying to rob policeman
New Orleans Police say a would-be armed robber ended up fatally shot when he tried to hold up three women early this morning.
Police say the women called a friend to help change a flat tire, and as that friend was working on it, the attempted robbery happened.
The NOPD says the friend changing the tire identified himself as a law officer and drew his weapon. Police say a gunfight erupted and the suspect ended up dead.
"An armed unknown male exited the vehicle and pointed the gun at one of the females and demanded her purse at which time she complied," Officer Garry Flot said in a news release. "At that time, the male changing the tire identified himself as a law enforcement officer and drew his firearm at which time there was an exchange of gunfire and the suspect was shot multiple times to the body."
No one else was hurt.
It happened around 2:00am in the 2600 block of Dreux Street in Gentilly.
Police are searching for an accomplice who fled the scene.
