Cops: Man abandons kids twice in a week

Cops say a Northshore man is behind bars for abandoning kids in his car twice in a week.

"Steven Charles won't be winning the father of the year award anytime soon," Slidell Police Detective Daniel Seuzeneau said in a news release.  "On May 2nd, 35-year old, Steven Charles, was involved in a hit and run accident near the intersection of Gause Boulevard and Carroll Road."

The detective says after the crash Charles fled on foot, but left his wrecked vehicle behind.

"Shockingly, when police looked inside, they discovered two young children.  Both of the children were under the age of five, and were left in the back seat to fend for themselves," Seuzeneau said.  "Luckily, the children were unharmed and police were able to safely return them to their mother."

He says they issued warrants for Charles for the hit and run crash and for abandoning the children.

"The manhunt was on, but Charles eluded police for almost a week, however, he was spotted this weekend by a Slidell Police officer.  The officer saw Charles driving a black GMC Envoy on Highway 11 and attempted stop him.  To no surprise, Charles fled and led police on a chase through the Lakewood Subdivision.  Charles drove to the end of a dead end road, bailed out of his vehicle, and jumped into a nearby pond."

Seuzeneau says they called in a police dog to help capture Charles.

"Once again, police were shocked when they found a different set of kids left in the back seat of the SUV.  This time a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old child were left behind by Charles.  The children were unharmed and were once again safely turned over to their mother.    Charles is now facing a slew of charges ranging from Aggravated Flight from an Officer to multiple counts of Child Abandonment."
