Cops: 9 people shot on Bourbon Street

New Orleans Police say there are a total of nine victims shot on Bourbon Street early this morning.

"Nine victims, six are in stable condition, two are in critical condition," Officer Frank Robertson said.

Officers responded to the shooting in the 700 block of Bourbon.

"The Shooting occurred around 2:45am," according to Robertson.

He said detectives are still working to determine what happened.

"We are still in the early, preliminary stages of the investigation."

"We received a call of nine people who had been shot on Bourbon Street," Liz Belcher with New Orleans EMS said. "The injuries varied from critical and life threatening to fairly minor,"

Witnesses initially said it appeared the shooter was targeting one person, and then started shooting into the crowd.

"He seemed pissed off at some dude, pulled the gun out and started shooting the guy," the witness told WWL TV.

He described how the gunman then started wildly firing at everyone.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the following statement fo llowing the incident:

“Our number one priority is to keep New Orleans safe. These kinds of incidents will not go unanswered. NOPD was in the immediate vicinity at the time of the incident, and I am confident that between video evidence and eyewitness accounts, we will bring the perpetrators to justice. Our crime fighting efforts have brought murders in the city of New Orleans to a historic nearly 30-year low. But on days like today, the statistics don't matter because every life is precious - from the 9th Ward to the French Quarter. We will not rest until every corner of this city is safe.”
