Cops: Wrong way driver causes I-10 closure

A pair on nasty crashes closed the I-10 heading from Kenner to LaPlace at four o' clock this morning.

"We had an impaired driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes," Trooper Melissa Matey told WWL First News.  "That impaired driver caused one 18-wheeler to swerve and eventually overturn.  The SUV continued eastbound and went head on with another 18-wheeler."

She says somehow no one was seriously hurt.

"All of the drivers have minor injuries, and that impaired driver is currently under arrest for DWI and several other charges."

Matey says they are still investigating.

"We want to find out exactly how that impaired driver got onto the interstate (going the wrong way)."

The crashes caused miles of delay heading through Metairie and Kenner.  State Police closed the westbound I-10 at I-310.

Matey said it was not clear how long it would take to reopen the I-10.
