According to Col. John Fortunato, it all began Friday afternoon when the deputy made a traffic stop near West Napoleon and Transcontinental.
Fortunato told WWL-TV that the suspect jumped out of his vehicle and ran, but then doubled back and jumped into the police car. As the suspect attempted to flee in the cruiser, Fortunato says the deputy reported seeing the suspect reaching inside of his jacket pocket.
The officer opened fire with his service weapon and hit the suspect in the shoulder, Fortunato said.
The spokesman says that's when the cruiser, with the suspect inside, crashed into the canal.
Police say the suspect attempted to jump into another vehicle without success, and then jumped back into the canal.
Fortunato says the suspect eventually surrendered himself to deputies. The deputy was not injured in the incident and the suspect is in the hospital.
JPSO officers say they are looking for the Chevy Envoy from which the suspect originally ran during the traffic stop. Fortunato says that vehicle had a woman and baby in it during the stop.
