A 2-year-old old boy is hospitalized in critical condition after he was caught in the crossfire of a gun fight outside of a Marrero apartment complex Saturday night.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's spokesman Col. John Fortunato says deputies were called to the scene in the 2800 block of Mt. Kennedy Drive shortly before 10 p.m.
"It appears as though, from the information that we have at this point, that the mother and the child were just getting out of a vehicle and were walking through the complex when, apparently, a gunfight ensued among participants not associated with the female and the child, and the child may have been struck with a round," says Fortunato.
The child was taken to University Hospital and underwent surgery upon arrival.
Detectives do not believe the mother or her child were the intended targets of the shooting.
Fortunato says there have been multiple crimes at the apartment complex in the past, and detectives found multiple shell casings from different types of guns.
