New Orleans Police say they have found the driver of a car that ran over and killed a child this morning in Gentilly.
"Police have located the vehicle involved in the fatality," Officer Garry Flot said.
They also took a man into custody.
"Just after 7am, a 6-year-old boy was struck by a late model sliver or grey Honda Crosstour at the intersection of Lafreniere and Paris Ave.," Officer Frank Robertson said in an email. "The Honda fled the scene."
Police and EMS raced to the scene and were able to get the child to the emergency room.
"The child was transported to the hospital," Robertson said.
A short time later he told us, "The 6-year-old boy has died as a result of his injuries."
The boy's 9-year-old sister suffered what police say are not life threatening injuries when the car hit her too.
Investigators asked for help finding the vehicle and the driver. Below is an example of the what the vehicle looks like.
NOPD released the following information Monday morning:
A 6-year-old boy was struck and killed by the driver of a gray Honda Crosstour. The name of the boy is being withheld pending notification of family members. The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 A.M., at the intersection of Paris Avenue and Lafreniere Street.
The 6-year-old boy and his 9-year-old sister along with two other children were crossing Paris Avenue in the crosswalk when the driver of a gray Honda Crosstour struck both children and fled the scene Northbound on Paris Avenue. The boy died at the hospital and the girl had non-life threatening injuries. The other two children were not struck or injured in the incident
Detectives found parts of the Honda Crosstour on the scene. The front of the vehicle received damage and Detectives are investigating to determine the registered owner and driver of the Honda Crosstour.
Detectives are searching the area for surveillance video footage that may have captured the incident and are asking residents that live in the area to check their surveillance system to see if it may have captured the incident or the Honda Crosstour.
The incident remains under investigation.
