Chief: 2 critically injured, 7 more shot on Bourbon Street

Two people were critically injured in a shooting on Bourbon Street that wounded nine people around 2:45am.

"Two cowardly young men got angry... and shot at each other," Police Chief Ronal Serpas said. "We are going to catch these two little f... young men!"

He did not complete whatever word that begins with f that he began to say.

He says police were on the scene withing seconds and 25 officers were already in the vicinity of the scene in the 700 block of Bourbon.

The investigation has found that there were two gunmen.

"They did exchange gunfire," the chief said.

EMS officials said that within 5 minutes, the first ambulance arrived on the scene and five ambulances with one paramedic sprint unit responded.

They said that two of the patients were in critical condition.  Serpas noted that most of the victims were not from New Orleans.

"This is a heinous crime, this is two young men... who decided to resolve a dispute between themselves with no regard for the public... it was about something stupid," the chief said.

Asked how the shooters got away if there were 25 cops in the area, the chief said, "The first thing our officers is trained to do is render aid."

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the  following statement following the incident:

“Our number one priority is to keep New Orleans safe. These kinds of incidents will not go unanswered. NOPD was in the immediate vicinity at the time of the incident, and I am confident that between video evidence and eyewitness accounts, we will bring the perpetrators to justice. Our crime fighting efforts have brought murders in the city of New Orleans to a historic nearly 30-year low. But on days like today, the statistics don't matter because every life is precious - from the 9th Ward to the French Quarter. We will not rest until every corner of this city is safe.”
