Causeway tolls are here to stay

As many Westbank commuters continue to celebrate the end of the paying tolls to cross the Crescent City Connection, what's the status of tolls on the
Lake Pontchartrain Causeway?

Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou says to begin with, the Causeway still has about 20 years to go just paying off a $44 million bond issue.  That, along with hefty maintenance patrols and upkeep, and the tolls will have to stay in place.  What about tolls going up?

''We're doing everything we can to avoid any revenue increases, if anything we've significantly cut the expenses over the past couple of years,'' said Dufrechou.

Listen to Carlton Dufrechou:

He says tolls could be raised by a Causeway Commission vote, coupled with Parish Council approval on both sides of the lake and then maybe a public vote.

Right now that's just not an issue.

''Reality is it's still the longest bridge in the world and one of the safest.''

Dufrechou says despite the need for improvements to the span, like adding shoulders, the issue of tolls just isn't a matter for discussion.
