Carnival costumes expected to include more than Mardi Gras masks

The silly season is upon us in New Orleans.

Fat Tuesday is just days away. And, that means you're likely to see some crazy costumes soon.

Amy O'Hara, manager of New Orleans Party & Costume, says they've been extremely busy.

"Yeah, and it seems to be getting busier and busier every year. For years, I don't think you saw so much that people were costuming, but people are costuming more than ever, I think."

She says Mardi Gras is quite different from that other costume holiday.

"Mardi Gras is a little bit different than Halloween," says O'Hara. "It's a little bit more creative, a little bit more eclectic."

She says it's also a lot more fun, with political satire poked at both local and national people and events.

And, believe it or not, she says it's growing.

"Yeah, it gets bigger every year. It's insane. I mean, if there's any place in this country to costume, it would be New Orleans."

She says you'll still see your usual super heroes, pirates and princesses on the streets. But, she also gets a lot of custom orders to fill.

"We get a lot of strange requests because, any kind of Mardi Gras costume ball you can imagine, it's out there. So you've got all sorts of different themes."

O'Hara says they not only sell and rent outfits off the rack, but they consult customers on their costumes.

"We're telling people to wear, like, a referee shirt. And, we've got these little hats, like a little construction hat that has a lantern on it. And then we have some blinking lights so people can be the 'Blackout Bowl.'
She says, when it comes to Mardi Gras, anything goes...especially, poking fun at ourselves.
