Can your confession in church be used against you in a court of law? A Michigan Court of Appeals is considering a case that could have serious repercussions.
The Archbishop of New Orleans Catholic Church says confessions to Priests should never be shared.
"No matter what it is, even if it's illegal" Archbishop Gregory Aymond insisted. "I am bound by church law, by Canon law, and by what we call -- quote 'the seal of confession' to tell no one."
He says even if it's murder, he would never divulge someone's confession.
"We can... encourage them to turn themselves in," Aymond said.
The archbishop said he would sacrifice his own freedom if it came down to it.
"We would go to jail before we would violate the seal of confession."
Aymond says if they were to break that confidence, it would discourage others from seeking forgiveness and salvation for their sins.
In the Michigan case, a Baptist pastor testified against a suspect who was found guilty of raping a 9 year old girl when he was 17. The clergyman said the suspect had confessed to him.
