Broussard faced a stacked deck

At one time, former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard was promising to put up a stiff legal fight, but legal experts said the deck was stacked against him.  With codefendants cooperating with federal prosecutors, legal analyst Tim Meche said Broussard was forced to cut his losses.

Depending on how much he cooperates could have a lot to do with how long his prison sentence turns out to be.

''The Federal Government will be interested in everything he knows about Jefferson Parish and elsewhere,'' said Meche.

Listen to legal analyst Tim Meche:

It is that cooperation in the plea agreement that could have a major impact on the eventual prison sentence, said Meche.

''He could reduce his sentence and exposure and it would also prolong the time he would stay out and have to go to jail himself,'' he explained.

Meche also noted that the judge can take into consideration at sentencing Broussard's age, now 62, and his current battle with prostate cancer.
