Will Patriots QB Tom Brady pass up Drew Brees Sunday and break the single season passing record the Saints quarterback just set last night?
Well that may depend on what Saints Coach Sean Payton decides to do. He may rest Brees and other starters against the Panthers this weekend to create a sort of bye week heading into the playoffs. What's his plan?
Payton didn't directly answer the question today.
"What we've got to do as we keep playing here and the playoffs are close; how do we put ourselves in a best position to play well and put ourselves in an opportunity to try to win a championship?"
Payton added that you try to make the right decisions.
"That's not always what's popular... it's part of what we do. It's part of coaching and it's part of sport."
Brady is right now less than 200 yards behind Brees.
Brees set the new record for most passing yards in a season with 5,087 through 15 games. Brady currently has 4,897.
The Saints are currently the third seed in the NFC playoffs. The only way they can move up and get a real bye in the first week of the post season is if the 49ers (12-3) lose to the Rams (2-13) Sunday and the Saints (12-3) beat the Panthers (6-9).
Brady and the Patriots (12-3) still have not clinched home field throughout the playoffs. They need to win Sunday to stay ahead of the Ravens (11-4). The Ravens play the Bengals (9-6) Sunday.
