Brees: ''Absolutely confident'' in team

Before leaving Green Bay, I spoke to Drew Brees for our one-on-one "Monday Morning Quarterback" interview.  Drew said that the loss to Green Bay does sting a little more than the other three, given how well they played at times.

"Yeah, I mean, we felt really good about coming in here and getting a win," Brees said.  "And I'd say for the most part, our performance showed that.  It was certainly a winning effort, we thought it was a winning performance.  Unfortunately, they're a great team, too.  They made a lot of plays, we made a lot of plays...we just couldn't get it at the end."

A couple of weeks ago, Drew told me that he was confident that the Black and Gold would hang together in the face of adversity.  Does he think the team can do that with a 0-4 start?

"Yes.  Absolutely.  We have the right type of guys.  Of course there's a sense of urgency, but we just want to continue to focus on the details, the fundamentals, and get a little better each week.  We know that will result in wins if we can continue to do that."

Brees told me that he still feels like they have a great team.

"I do believe that.  We've put ourselves in quite a hole here, and we've got a mountain to climb, but we've got the guys to do it."

My thoughts following the game:  At the end of the day, the element of Sean Payton not being there was more apparent in this game than others.  Payton is the master of making the right call, putting his foot on an opponent and not letting them up.  That wasn't the case against the Packers.

From my vantage point on the sideline, YES, the team has looked better and better each week.  But fans don't want to hear that.  These are improvements that should have been made during training camp.  Fans would much rather see an ugly win than steady improvement through four losses.  The bottom line is:  This team doesn't know how to finish.

Brees: “Absolutely confident” in team

WHO CARES IF HE IS CONFIDENT!!!!!
This is a 4-12 team this year at best.
10/01/2012 12:37PM
No defense
The Aint's defense is exactly that "it aint a defense". 2 or 3 wins tops. Playoffs - forget about it.
10/01/2012 12:46PM
It's all we got!
If weekly improvement is all we have than that is that. This team was kicked in the groin repeated during the off season. They need our support right now. There are still twelve games left.
10/01/2012 12:47PM
TIRED...JUST PLAIN AND SIMPLY TIRED
I think I speak for all Saints fans when I say that we're just tired of hearing the same thing from the man who held us hostage over his contract and not producing on the field. Yes, I know Drew doesn't play defense or kick field goals, (hell, apparantly neither does Roman Harper or Garrett Hartley), but his interceptions in the first three games and the 3 straight pass attempts with a 1st and goal inside the 5 yesterday were embarrassing. Stop talking and start playing.
10/01/2012 12:48PM
HOW SOON WE FORGET!!!!!!!!!!!
With everything Saints fans have been through, we CANNOT forget that just a few short years ago, we were on top of the world! Last year we won 13 games. Most of the current players deserve our support now more than ever. Is it frustrating? You know it! But come on... Brees and most of the players brought us to where we have never been.
10/01/2012 12:54PM
Goodell
It sure is funny how widely covered Goodell's witch hunt was! Where are all of the ESPN freaks now... This referee junk was nothing compared to the destruction he caused our team.
10/01/2012 12:59PM
WE DIDN'T FORGET..THAT'S WHY WE EXPECT AND DESERVE MORE
Roman Harper single handedly lost the last 2 playoff games for us (Seattle & San Francisco). How he still has a job is beyond me. Garret Hartley is and has been eratic over the last 3 seasons (last year he couldn't play because he hurt his hip without contact). Drew talks about being the leader of this team and the face of the organization, but yet instead of being at the ota's and mini-camps, he was "talking" about the hold-up of his contract negotiations. Now we are seeing why Mickey Loomis didn't want to cave so early-on. Drew wants to be paid Brady and Manning money, but he is not playing like it. Yes, I was there when the dome re-opened, I was there when we beat the Eagles in the playoffs, I was there when Hartley's kick went through the uprights, and I expect more. These are the same core group of guys. I know Drew broke records last season, but come-on, if you had your choice of Brady, Manning, or Brees with the game on the line, honestly, Brees, even last season, would have been my 3rd choice of the three.

Our day in the Sun
I used to drop support for the team saying "if only, at any time in our history we had had our 'Day in the Sun'". Well we've had that now and Brees and company gave it to us. In the 70s people tried to predict athletic performance with "biorhythms". People are always trying to figure out how to perform at their best under the gun. Truth is . . no one knows why the Saints are struggling. Obviously the Bounty penalties hurt. But no one can take what we earned a few years ago and who ever thought it would even happen. Thanks Saints and hang in there.
10/01/2012 1:05PM
How soon we forget - AGREED!!!!
Tired....Just Plain and Simply Tired you will NEVER speak for me. This Saints team has brought greatness to our city and you are "tired"???? I can't believe anyone that is a true fan would think such a thing. This team is down and needs the fans more than ever so instead of turning your back, get up and scream loud at games and help this team as much as possible! THAT is what a TRUE fan would do.
10/01/2012 1:12PM
IT'S OVER
Face it!It's over!Nothing further to say!Yes I am a Saints fan from Gulfport,MS,but it's officially over!0-4,better chance to make the playoffs and host the superbowl,it's over!Get acustom to it!
10/01/2012 1:16PM
IT'S OVER
We're done for the year!
10/01/2012 1:22PM
We will go 9-7 and make the playoffs
We need to establish the run game and we need to get Kromer off the sideline, hes deaf and cant speak unless hes asked to. Our O-Line sucks and whos the coach of the OLine? Kromer is.Sean Payton makes a difference and the answer fo course but we need to work with what weve got and Spags should be on the cutting block as well.
10/01/2012 1:23PM
Kristian That wasnt much of an interview with Drew
Just Sayin
10/01/2012 1:27PM
Bring In Bobby Hebert to Coach
Bring in Bobby to coach. Bobby has more energy in his big toe than Kromer does in his entire body. Bobby coach this team and show your support. All we need is some energy on the side lines and get this team hyped up
10/01/2012 1:34PM
Take the pacifiers out of your mouths!!!
For crying out loud!!!! Stop complaining! None of you nay sayers, including the journalists, could have handles 1/2 of what this team has been put through in the last months!!! Be a FAN and support your Saints or move to Chicago. If you want to put yournegativity to good use write to Goodell and ask him why Williams is suddenly off the hook and Sean is still banned?!?!?! Take the pacifiers out of your mouths and be a grown up WHO DAT!! Bless 'dem boys!!
10/01/2012 1:36PM
Shockey
This team needs some Shockey motivation. Where is he at? Bring him in.
10/01/2012 1:36PM
Salvage
The focus now should be to come away with the first pick in the next draft. Anything less would be a bust
10/01/2012 1:40PM
Pickup
They better call SDT waste management because this team is GARBAGE!!!!
10/01/2012 1:43PM
UNBELIEVABLE D
Its hard to believe that this is a NFL defense with NFL coaches. They are so bad across the board. No pass rush, cant stop the run, and struggle in the secondary, to be kind. I cant see much of an improvement until there is changes in personnel.
10/01/2012 1:55PM
Change Coaches!! Hummmmm
I like the comment on make Bobby Hebert a coach for the season.....He is knowledgable and very out spoken and I believe he will make necessary changes in this ball club immediately!!
10/01/2012 1:58PM
Defense!!
The only word we need to be saying is DEFENSE!!!!! Thats all we need.....now anyway! We need personell fast!!!
10/01/2012 2:02PM
Remember the GIANTS
DREW keep fighting! Just get us to the PLAYOFFS then it's a whole new ball game. "FANS" stay positive and keep hope alive. WHO DAT!!!
10/01/2012 5:53PM
Defense wins championships
Should have spent more money on their defensive unit while exploring all of their options. Oh how the mighty have fallen... They would need to completely sell out and maybe make some moves before the trade deadline. Fyi drew almost had a few picked off. That game could have gotten ugly.
10/01/2012 8:10PM
Lots of FAIR WEATHER Fans!
You people drive me crazy. You socalled fans are as bad as the media. I love this team and I will support them if they go 0-16! Never would have thought that Saints fans would act this way, Guess you only love them when they are winning a superbowl. Go root for the Fn Cowboys! Im a Saints fan for life, This too shall pass. Real fans support their team no matter what, win or lose.

Mike Florio on Gregg Williams attending a Rams game. Take that Fake Fans.
“Posted by Mike Florio on October 1, 2012, 3:26 PM EDT The league’s decision to allow former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to attend Sunday’s game between the Seahawks and the Rams has spawned a string of conflicts accounts and explanations. Adam Schefter of ESPN explained earlier today that Williams is permitted to attend any game he wants. Williams, as Schefter explained it, has been banned not suspended. As a result, Williams currently isn’t employed by any team. So he can go watch any team play. The league tells PFT that Williams needs to request permission on a game-by-game basis. The mere fact that Williams must say “mother may I” suggests that he’s not free and clear to attend games on the basis that he has been banned. Moreover, banned is worse than suspended. So if the guys how have been suspended can’t attend, why can the guy who has been banned attend? Most importantly, he hasn’t been banned. He has been suspended. As the Rams explained it earlier today via email to PFT: “He was hired by the Rams as defensive coordinator, then the NFL suspended him indefinitely.” So he’s still employed by the Rams. And given that he has received the worst of the various suspensions, the fact that he has been permitted to attend a game makes the league’s decision even more curious. Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma agrees: “What a coincidence gregg williams is all of a sudden allowed to attend rams games starting today…sidedeal??? Yessir.” Vilma is referring to the September 14 sworn statement from Williams, which implicates Vilma as offering $10,000 to whoever knocked former Vikings quarterback Brett Favre out of the 2009 NFC title game. And Vilma implies that the league allowed Williams to attend the game because Williams cooperated with the league. Either way, suspended Saints coach Sean Payton should be demanding the ability to attend Sunday night’s game between the Chargers and the Saints — and if the league says no, he should be demanding an explanation.”
