Drew Brees' mother has died. The Saints quarterback has been excused from training camp as a result.
The Austin American-Statesman reported Saturday that Brees' mother, Mina Brees, died at the age of 59.
The Associated Press said that Brees had previously called his relationship with his mother "nonexistent" after he refused to hire her as his agent.
Mina Brees, at the time, said her son's allegations were a mischaracterization and that she had no intention of becoming his agent. "I love Drew very much, and I'm very proud of him. But sometimes when people are following a career path, they change," she said.
The two also clashed when his mother was running for a judgeship in Texas.
Brees reportedly asked his mother to stop using his likeness in campaign commercials for a Texas appeals court.
Brees was quoted saying, "My mother is using me in a campaign, and I've made it known many times I don't want to be involved."
The cause of Mina Brees' death was not immediately released.
