Bounty appeal hearings begin

Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue today began what he expects to be a week of hearings in NFL players' appeal of the punishments in the league's so-called "bounty" investigation.

Tagliabue says he wants to wrap things up by December 4, and said he will rule on the appeals shortly after the hearings' conclusion.

New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma is fighting a season-long suspension.  Defensive end Will Smith is trying to nullify a four-game suspension.  Both players have been allowed to play this season while fighting the suspensions.

Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita and free-agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove have also been fighting to clear their names.  The NFL said the Saints ran a "bounty" program from 2009 to 2011 under then-defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, in which players paid into a pool that rewarded them for so-called "cart-off" and "knock-out" hits.
