Bagneris candidacy changes NOLA mayor's race

The New Orleans Mayor's race has changed with the entry of a new candidate today, one with political experience and the ability to raise money.

Michael Bagneris, until this week, was a judge in civil district court. He resigned and signed up to challenge incumbent New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

"He changes the mayor's election dramatically," said Gambit political editor Clancy DuBos.

DuBos said Bagneris goes back a long way in city hall. He once worked as an aid to Mayor Dutch Morial.

"By the time January gets here, he will be well-funded and he will be a very formidable challenger to Mayor Mitch Landrieu," said DuBos.

DuBos says Bagneris' entry doesn't automatically make it a close race, but will at least mean a challenge for the incumbent.

Local NAACP president Danatus King is also vying for the mayor's office.
