Automatic SWAT weapon, gear, badges stolen from NOPD car
Chris Miller Reporting
Local authorities are on the lookout for some stolen police gear, including a fully-automatic rifle, taken from a New Orleans Police vehicle.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's officials say the NOPD car was parked in Jefferson Parish, and was among a group of vehicles that had been broken into Sunday, February 3.
Among items stolen from the car were an M4 carbine (stock photo of similar weapon), a tactical vest marked "SWAT," concussion grenades and a pair of NOPD badges, one silver, one gold.
Sheriff's officials say all of the vehicles' owners say their cars were locked, but there were no signs of forced entry, either.
An NOPD spokesperson says the officer who is responsible for the vehicle is being investigated for a possible breach of departmental policy by leaving the equipment in the trunk of the car.
Anyone with information about the crime or whereabouts of the missing police equipment is asked to call Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Detective Todd Rivere at 364-5300 or Crimestoppers at 822-1111.
