Brees talked about the drawn-out process that eventually led to the deal days before the deadline.
"When you're talking about the type of contracts these are, the type of money that's out there, at times, it's hard for people to ... identify or grasp what's happening here," Brees said. "I think it's very easy to sit back and say that this is ridiculous. But the fact is, I think the desired result was reached, and I think we're all excited about that -- and ecstatic -- and now it's time to get to work, and that's all we've wanted to do this entire offseason.

In my mind, I always feel like I've got to go out every day and earn it and show people why you're at that level," Brees told Bobby Hebert and co-hosts Zach Strief and Kristian Garic. "I can tell you from the start of this negotiation, I have not thought once about, 'Hey, I want to be the highest-paid guy or what have you.' ... It was more about trying to look truly, just objectively, at the numbers the last decade for a top-tier quarterback and where it has been and where it is going and just trying to do what is fair and justified."
