Another extension for disaster food stamps

Today was supposed to be the last day for post-Isaac food stamps at the Alario Center and at UNO Lakefront Arena... but it will continue a little longer.

Officials now say they will allow people to apply for disaster food stamps through Saturday in Orleans and Jefferson Parish.

"The last day to apply in both of those parishes will now be on Saturday," Department of Children and Family Services Spokesman Trey Williams said.  "We received word from the USDA, they've granted a two day extension."

He says they will again divide applicants into groups based on the first letter of their last names.

"Friday we will see letters A through M, and then on Saturday we will see letters N through Z."

Williams says they continue to see large numbers of people turning out to apply.

"We want to ensure that the people who need the aid... have the opportunity to apply and receive it," he explained.
