For the second time this week the NOPD has arrested and suspended an officer.
"Officer Willie A. Gant, Sr. has been placed on emergency suspension without pay after being arrested on two counts of Indecent Behavior with Juveniles and two counts of Sexual Battery on a Juvenile," according to a news release from NOPD. "The NOPD Public Integrity Bureau (PIB), in conjunction with the NOPD Special Victims Unit, launched an investigation after learning of the allegations."
The release says that following the arrest, Deputy Chief Arlinda Westbrook immediately placed Gant on emergency suspension without pay.
"Gant is a 26-year veteran of the NOPD and was most recently assigned to the NOPD Eighth District Mounted Unit."
It's the second time this week and fourth time this month that the NOPD has arrested and suspended a veteran officer. Monday, police announced the arrest and suspension of Officer Stephanie Caldwell, a 10-year veteran. She is charged in a domestic violence case that includes allegations she was driving the wrong way down North Broad Street, chasing a man who was on foot.
Earlier this month, Officer Christopher Carter, another 10-year veteran, was arrested and placed on unpaid suspension in a domestic abuse case. And three days before that, NOPD arrested and suspended Detective Robert Hurst on charges of attempted murder and simple battery. The attempted murder charge was later dropped.
