An invitation to the Marijuana Party

Would you like to join the Marijuana Party? A group of people who want to legalize marijuana are forming their own political party, but to make it happen, they need the help of at least a thousand registered voters.

Louisiana Marijuana Party organizer Jerry Jacobs says that's what they need for official state recognition.

"Once we become a recognized party, the party name and symbol will be on a ballot," said Jacobs, "as opposed to  a man or a woman's name with 'NP' for 'No Party.'"

Jacobs says money put into prosecuting marijuana crimes could be better spent elsewhere.

"We believe that the mood of the country has changed," he said, referencing a poll the Louisiana ACLU commissioned last year: "Recent polls show that over 50 percent of the people in the state of Louisiana favor the legalization of marijuana."

Jacobs says people who are interested can find instructions on how to register to vote as a member of the Louisiana Marijuana Party on their web site, louisianamarijuanaparty.org (click here).

These people in New Orleans seem to agree that the legal battle against marijuana trafficking has been a futile one.

"Of course," said one. "They do everything else."

"We have access to all the marijuana we need," another pointed out.

But would they want their voter registration to read "Marijuana Party?"

"No, I wouldn't do that," was on reaction, and another morning commuter told WWL First News, "I don't know about that one."
