Aaron Broussard sentenced to 46 months

Former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard learned his fate today from a New Orleans federal judge.

U.S. Federal Judge Hayden Head sentenced Broussard to 46 months in prison on corruption charges.

Speaking to the court before his sentence, Broussard said, "I accept full responsibility. I apologize to the people of Jefferson Parish. I brought dishonor to my position."

Broussard admitted to a payroll fraud scheme in which Broussard and others created a "no-show" job for Karen Parker, Broussard's then-girlfriend.

The former Parish President also admitted guilt in taking bribes from Bill Mack, a Kenner businessman seeking parish contracts.

The Judge also agreed with prosecutors who asked that the disgraced former Parish President be ordered to forfeit $280,000.  That includes $160,400 paid in salary and benefits to Parker, $53,800 in salary and benefits for former Jefferson Parish Attorney Tom Wilkinson, and $66,000 from Kenner businessman William Mack.

Broussard is to report to prison April 8th.

The judge did not send Wilkinson to jail, instead sentencing him to three years probation.  Broussard's ex-wife also got three years probation.  Both Wilkinson and Parker were set to testify against Broussard.

Prosecutors had earlier asked Judge Head to reduce Broussard's prison time for letting them avoid trial preparation by telling them early that he would plead guilty.

They and Broussard's chief administrative officer, Tim Whitmer, pleaded guilty.

Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon is scheduled to sentence Whitmer May 30 for misprision of a felony:  knowing about the payroll scheme but failing to report it.

Mack pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery. His sentencing is scheduled July 11 before Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown.

Six months after Broussard resigned as Parish President, his Kenner home was seized for failing to pay his mortgage. When he pleaded guilty last year, he told Head he was living with his mother at her house in Kenner.
