81-year-old woman killed in Bridge City

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's detectives continue their investigation into the shooting of an 81-year-old woman who died in a hail of bullets fired into her Bridge City home this weekend.

Doretha Richardson was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds just before midnight Friday.

Deputies responding to a report of gunfire found the woman lying on the kitchen floor of her home in the 300 block of 5th Street.

"There were three other people in the house at the time," said JPSO Col. John Fortunato. "Actually, we have two witnesses who claimed they were in the bedroom, sleeping, when they were awakened by gunshots. They thought they heard a vehicle pulling away from the home immediately following the gunshots, but they could provide no information."

Fortunato says the other people in the house were Richardson's grandson, his girlfriend and the victim's three-year-old great granddaughter.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

Fortunato says it was not clear if the victim was the intended target.

"At this time, we're really not sure. We do know that we've had some past criminal activity at that address involving narcotics. But we're not going to expound any further at this point, because that's going to be a part of our follow-up investigation."

Police now believe at least two shooters were involved. Deputies say two men were seen coming toward the house and firing.

Bullet casings were found lining the street with a trail leading to Richardson's front door. Casings were also found inside of the home.
Anyone with information on this homicide is asked to call the JPSO Investigations Bureau at 504-364-5300 or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
