35,000 Jehovah's Witnesses meeting in New Orleans

Tens of thousands of members of a religious group are spending the weekend in New Orleans.

"Jehovah's Witnesses will be at the dome June 13th through 15th,"  Superdome General Manager Allen Freeman said.

The gathering is as large as some of the biggest conventions New Orleans ever hosts.

"They are expecting about 35,000 people per day," according to Freeman.  "It's one of those big events that sort of comes in under the radar, but it is a big event for our city."

He says it is filling hotels.

The Jehovah's Witnesses gathering has never been at the Superdome before.

Freeman noted, "It's the first time ever in our facility."

Who are the Jehovah's Witnesses?

"We are Christians," according to the group's website. "We try to follow closely the teachings and behavior of Jesus Christ.  We believe that Jesus is the key to salvation."

The site notes some unique differences from other Christian religions.

"We are different from other religious groups that are called Christian. For example, we believe that the Bible teaches that Jesus is the Son of God, not part of a Trinity. (Mark 12:29) We do not believe that the soul is immortal, that there is any basis in Scripture for saying that God tortures people in an everlasting hell, or that those who take the lead in religious activities should have titles that elevate them above others.—Ecclesiastes 9:5; Ezekiel 18:4; Matthew 23:8-10."

Jehovah's Witnesses also do not celebrate Christmas and other holidays.

This meeting comes on the heels of the nation's Catholic Bishops gathering in New Orleans.
