The last time we saw Saints linebacker Will Herring, he was hobbling off the field favoring his right knee against Carolina on January 1st. We would later find out that he had sprained his medial collateral ligament and was subsequently placed on injured reserve, ending his season.
The former Seattle Seahawk came to New Orleans hoping to compete for a starting job at outside linebacker, but 2011 was just a big disappointment. He would make the team as a back-up and special teamer, but wasn't able to stay on the field.
Besides ending up on IR after the final game of the regular season, he was also inactive for five weeks, due to a left hamstring injury. His stats for his first season in Black and Gold: 11 games, 9 tackles (8 solo, 1 assisted) with one interception and one pass defended.
With Herring's injury problems, a new sheriff in town at defensive coordinator, and the fact that the Saints can save a little more than one million dollars of salary cap room but cutting him ... I don't expect "Bootstrap Bill" back in Black & Gold in 2012-13.
