10-year-old found with loaded gun at Thibodaux elementary school
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews reported a 10-year-old boy is in custody today after bringing a loaded handgun to an elementary school in Thibodaux last Thursday.
Administrators at Thibodaux Elementary School learned a student was in possession of a .380 caliber automatic pistol Thursday. A School Resource Officer confiscated the weapon after it was located in the student's school bag. Juvenile detectives responded, and through investigation, they learned the child had allegedly brought the gun to school only to show to his friends.
The child's stepfather is the owner of the gun, and detectives say they do not suspect the juvenile had any intention of firing the weapon or hurting anyone.
The juvenile is currently at the Juvenile Justice Facility in Thibodaux pending a hearing in Thibodaux City Court on Thursday, April 17. Due to the offender's age, his name is not being released.
Superintendent Matthews indicated administrative actions will be taken in accordance with the Lafourche Parish School Board's discipline policy.
